- boxer to win the heavy-
- weight title wearing
- boxing gloves. Before his
- title fight, boxing had been a bare-knuckle
- brawl. An English sportsman, the Marquis of
- Queensbury, helped create a set of rules that
- required boxers to wear gloves, and set
- rounds at three minutes long.

- Jim faced John L. Sullivan on September 7,
- 1892, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to decide
- the heavyweight championship under the new
- rules. John L., as he was called, was the last
- and best of the bare-knuckle champions.
- John L. was expected to win because he
- outweighed Jim 212 pounds to 178.
